Cerro Blanco Protected Forest: Nature Escape Just Minutes from Guayaquil

Sometimes the best weekend escapes are the ones closest to home. If you live in Guayaquil and need a quick reset from the noise of the city, Cerro Blanco Protected Forest is one of the best places to reconnect with nature without traveling far.

Located at kilometer 16 of Vía a la Costa, Cerro Blanco is only about 15–30 minutes from central Guayaquil depending on traffic, making it one of the easiest nature getaways near the city. It feels surprisingly far away once you’re surrounded by trees, birds, and the peaceful silence of the forest.

I first visited in April with three friends, just looking for a simple hiking adventure close to the city. We wanted to explore, disconnect, and spend time surrounded by nature—and Cerro Blanco was the perfect choice.

After enjoying that first experience so much, I decided to return again in October, this time with a family activity organized by Nuna Care. This second visit was even more special because it was designed as a family hike with babies, helping them connect with nature while parents enjoyed a peaceful outdoor experience.

Two Trails, Two Great Experiences

The first trail we explored was Sendero Higuerón, which took us almost two hours. It is a bit longer but still very manageable and beginner-friendly. I went with three friends who had never been there before, and everyone had a great time.

The second visit with Nuna Care was on Sendero Buena Vista, which is shorter and perfect for families. The hike itself took around 50 minutes, and afterward we spent time at a viewpoint doing activities with the families and babies. It was a beautiful experience because it combined nature, movement, and quality family time.

The entrance fee was $5 per person, and the guide fee depends on the trail you choose. For us, Buena Vista cost $12 and Higuerón $20. Since visits are guided, the experience becomes much more interesting because the guides explain the history of the forest, the plants, and the animals you can find there.

What Makes Cerro Blanco Special

What I liked most about Cerro Blanco is how close it is to Guayaquil while still feeling like a complete escape from the city. In just a short drive, you go from traffic and buildings to birds singing, giant trees, and fresh air.

During the hikes, we saw many birds, beautiful native plants, and learned a lot from the guide. The guides are always sharing the history of the forest and explaining the plants and animals around you, which makes the experience much richer.

You really need to keep your eyes open and feel the nature—Cerro Blanco is one of those places where the more attention you pay, the more it gives back.

You can also camp there if you want to extend the experience and spend a full night surrounded by nature.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

If you’re planning your first visit, here are a few recommendations:

  • Bring insect repellent
  • Carry a water bottle with you
  • Go early in the morning for better weather and wildlife activity
  • Contact a guide beforehand, especially on weekends, in case tours are full
  • Sports shoes are enough—you don’t necessarily need hiking boots
  • Please do not leave trash behind—take care of nature

This is a perfect activity for beginners. It’s not a difficult hike, and it works well for friends, families, and even small children.

Cerro Blanco is the kind of place that reminds you how important it is to disconnect for a few hours. Whether you go with friends or join a family activity like I did with Nuna Care, it offers a simple but meaningful way to reset.

For a Saturday, Sunday, or even a Monday escape, I would totally recommend it.

Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones right next to home.
